Hertz: Why It's Too Early To Invest Yet

Summary Hertz stock rallied after reporting strong Q2 earnings, followed by promising guidance for Q3 and the full financial year. I am impressed by Hertz's progress to the extent that I am moving to a more neutral stance on the company after being bearish for quite some time. At a unit economics level, Hertz reported notable progress in Q2. This is exactly what investors want to see in a turnaround story. The bigger question is whether Hertz can sustain the improvements in unit economics. I discuss how this expectation is complicated by Hertz's exposure to the used car market. Even if Hertz were to achieve its operational goals, including $1 billion+ EBITDA in 2027, investors need to evaluate if these gains would efficiently flow through to common shareholders.
