Rimini Street, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:RMNI) Share Price Boosted 37% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too
Rimini Street, Inc. (NASDAQ:RMNI) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 37% share price jump in the last month. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 15% over that time.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Rimini Street may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.6x, considering almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 5.7x and even P/S higher than 14x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does Rimini Street's Recent Performance Look Like?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Rimini Street's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Rimini Street's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered virtually the same number to the company's top line as the year before. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 18% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing revenue over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 6.6% over the next year. With the industry predicted to deliver 26% growth, that's a disappointing outcome.
In light of this, it's understandable that Rimini Street's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
What We Can Learn From Rimini Street's P/S?
Rimini Street's recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
It's clear to see that Rimini Street maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
