Sentiment Still Eluding Baidu, Inc. (NASDAQ:BIDU)
With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 11.3x Baidu, Inc. (NASDAQ:BIDU) may be sending bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios greater than 20x and even P/E's higher than 35x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Baidu could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It seems that many are expecting the dour earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Baidu's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 7.3%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 47% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 11% per annum during the coming three years according to the analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be similar to the 11% per annum growth forecast for the broader market.
With this information, we find it odd that Baidu is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.
What We Can Learn From Baidu's P/E?
We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Our examination of Baidu's analyst forecasts revealed that its market-matching earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted. There could be some unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the outlook. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.
