DRDGOLD (NYSE:DRD) Is Experiencing Growth In Returns On Capital
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So when we looked at DRDGOLD (NYSE:DRD) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for DRDGOLD, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.19 = R1.4b ÷ (R8.3b - R757m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2023).
Thus, DRDGOLD has an ROCE of 19%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Metals and Mining industry average of 8.9% it's much better.

What Can We Tell From DRDGOLD's ROCE Trend?
The fact that DRDGOLD is now generating some pre-tax profits from its prior investments is very encouraging. The company was generating losses five years ago, but now it's earning 19% which is a sight for sore eyes. Not only that, but the company is utilizing 102% more capital than before, but that's to be expected from a company trying to break into profitability. This can tell us that the company has plenty of reinvestment opportunities that are able to generate higher returns.
The Bottom Line
In summary, it's great to see that DRDGOLD has managed to break into profitability and is continuing to reinvest in its business. Since the stock has returned a staggering 257% to shareholders over the last five years, it looks like investors are recognizing these changes. With that being said, we still think the promising fundamentals mean the company deserves some further due diligence.
Since virtually every company faces some risks, it's worth knowing what they are, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for DRDGOLD (of which 1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that you should know about.
