Some CAVA Group, Inc. (NYSE:CAVA) Shareholders Look For Exit As Shares Take 25% Pounding
CAVA Group, Inc. (NYSE:CAVA) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 25% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 34% in that time.
Although its price has dipped substantially, CAVA Group's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 55.5x might still make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 18x and even P/E's below 11x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, CAVA Group has been doing relatively well. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is CAVA Group's Growth Trending?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, CAVA Group would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 219% last year. Still, EPS has barely risen at all from three years ago in total, which is not ideal. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest earnings growth is heading into negative territory, declining 4.6% per annum over the next three years. With the market predicted to deliver 11% growth each year, that's a disappointing outcome.
With this information, we find it concerning that CAVA Group is trading at a P/E higher than the market. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as these declining earnings are likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Final Word
A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate CAVA Group's very lofty P/E. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that CAVA Group currently trades on a much higher than expected P/E for a company whose earnings are forecast to decline. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as the predicted future earnings are highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. This places shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
It is also worth noting that we have found 2 warning signs for CAVA Group (1 is concerning!) that you need to take into consideration.
