Pleasing Signs As A Number Of Insiders Buy FreightCar America Stock
When a single insider purchases stock, it is typically not a major deal. However, when multiple insiders purchase stock, like in FreightCar America, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:RAIL) instance, it's good news for shareholders.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At FreightCar America
In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Chairman of the Board James Meyer bought US$251k worth of shares at a price of US$10.74 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being US$9.94). It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock if insiders have bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price.
Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 30.40k shares worth US$313k. On the other hand they divested 7.98k shares, for US$69k. In total, FreightCar America insiders bought more than they sold over the last year. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. Insiders At FreightCar America Have Sold Stock Recently
The last three months saw significant insider selling at FreightCar America. Specifically, insider Celia Perez ditched US$69k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. In light of this it's hard to argue that all the insiders think that the shares are a bargain.
Does FreightCar America Boast High Insider Ownership?
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It appears that FreightCar America insiders own 25% of the company, worth about US$43m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
So What Do The FreightCar America Insider Transactions Indicate?
An insider hasn't bought FreightCar America stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. On the other hand, the insider transactions over the last year are encouraging. We like that insiders own a fair amount of the company. So we're not overly bothered by recent selling. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
