For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like ILPRA (BIT:ILP), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Fast Is ILPRA Growing Its Earnings Per Share?
Even with very modest growth rates, a company will usually do well if it improves earnings per share (EPS) year after year. So it's no surprise that some investors are more inclined to invest in profitable businesses. ILPRA has grown its trailing twelve month EPS from €0.19 to €0.20, in the last year. That's a modest gain of 5.6%.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. While we note ILPRA's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 8.0% to €33m. That's a real positive.
The chart below shows how the company's bottom and top lines have progressed over time. For finer detail, click on the image.
ILPRA isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of €25m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.
Are ILPRA Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Many consider high insider ownership to be a strong sign of alignment between the leaders of a company and the ordinary shareholders. So we're pleased to report that ILPRA insiders own a meaningful share of the business. Indeed, with a collective holding of 78%, company insiders are in control and have plenty of capital behind the venture. This makes me think they will be incentivised to plan for the long term - something I like to see. With that sort of holding, insiders have about €20m riding on the stock, at current prices. That's nothing to sneeze at!
Does ILPRA Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
One important encouraging feature of ILPRA is that it is growing profits. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. It is worth noting though that we have found 3 warning signs for ILPRA (2 are potentially serious!) that you need to take into consideration.
