The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But on a lighter note, a good company can see its share price rise well over 100%. For instance, the price of Idsud S.A. (EPA:ALIDS) stock is up an impressive 232% over the last five years. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 19% gain in the last three months. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 8.5% in 90 days).

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Idsud's earnings per share are down 16% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.

Essentially, it doesn't seem likely that investors are focused on EPS. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.

We are not particularly impressed by the annual compound revenue growth of 1.9% over five years. So it seems one might have to take closer look at earnings and revenue trends to see how they might influence the share price.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Idsud's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Dividends have been really beneficial for Idsud shareholders, and that cash payout contributed to why its TSR of 238%, over the last 5 years, is better than the share price return.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Idsud has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 66% in the last twelve months. That's better than the annualised return of 28% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For instance, we've identified 3 warning signs for Idsud (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable) that you should be aware of.
