Stock Analysis

Cellnex Telecom (BME:CLNX) shareholders have endured a 19% loss from investing in the stock five years ago

The main aim of stock picking is to find the market-beating stocks. But every investor is virtually certain to have both over-performing and under-performing stocks. So we wouldn't blame long term Cellnex Telecom, S.A. (BME:CLNX) shareholders for doubting their decision to hold, with the stock down 31% over a half decade.

So let's have a look and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

Given that Cellnex Telecom didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

In the last half decade, Cellnex Telecom saw its revenue increase by 23% per year. That's better than most loss-making companies. Shareholders are no doubt disappointed with the loss of 5%, each year, in that time. You could say that the market has been harsh, given the top line growth. So now is probably an apt time to look closer at the stock, if you think it has potential.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Cellnex Telecom's TSR for the last 5 years was -19%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

Cellnex Telecom shareholders gained a total return of 0.8% during the year. But that return falls short of the market. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it is certainly better than the yearly loss of about 4% endured over half a decade. It could well be that the business is stabilizing.
