Temenos' (VTX:TEMN) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's
The board of Temenos AG (VTX:TEMN) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of $1.20 on the 14th of May, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 2.1%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.
While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Temenos' stock price has reduced by 37% in the last 3 months, which is not ideal for investors and can explain a sharp increase in the dividend yield.

Temenos' Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. The last payment made up 76% of earnings, but cash flows were much higher. Since the dividend is just paying out cash to shareholders, we care more about the cash payout ratio from which we can see plenty is being left over for reinvestment in the business.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 51.9%. Under the assumption that the dividend will continue along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 48% which would be quite comfortable going to take the dividend forward.
Temenos Has A Solid Track Record
The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. The annual payment during the last 10 years was $0.392 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was $1.31. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 13% a year over that time. It is good to see that there has been strong dividend growth, and that there haven't been any cuts for a long time.
Dividend Growth Is Doubtful
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. However, initial appearances might be deceiving. In the last five years, Temenos' earnings per share has shrunk at approximately 5.8% per annum. Declining earnings will inevitably lead to the company paying a lower dividend in line with lower profits. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.
In Summary
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Temenos will make a great income stock. The company is generating plenty of cash, but we still think the dividend is a bit high for comfort. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
