Coronation Fund Managers Limited (JSE:CML) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 9th of December to ZAR2.28. This will take the annual payment to 9.3% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Coronation Fund Managers' Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, Coronation Fund Managers' dividend made up quite a large proportion of earnings but only 31% of free cash flows. This leaves plenty of cash for reinvestment into the business.

If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 13.0% over the next 12 months. Under the assumption that the dividend will continue along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 74% which would be quite comfortable going to take the dividend forward.

Dividend Volatility

While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from ZAR5.50 total annually to ZAR3.70. This works out to be a decline of approximately 3.9% per year over that time. Declining dividends isn't generally what we look for as they can indicate that the company is running into some challenges.

Coronation Fund Managers Might Find It Hard To Grow Its Dividend

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. We are encouraged to see that Coronation Fund Managers has grown earnings per share at 13% per year over the past five years. The payout ratio is very much on the higher end, which could mean that the growth rate will slow down in the future, and that could flow through to the dividend as well.

In Summary

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
