Possible Bearish Signals With Kirby Insiders Disposing Stock
Over the past year, many Kirby Corporation (NYSE:KEX) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Independent Director, William Waterman, for US$5.2m worth of shares, at about US$130 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$96.78. So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.
In the last year Kirby insiders didn't buy any company stock. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Does Kirby Boast High Insider Ownership?
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It appears that Kirby insiders own 0.7% of the company, worth about US$41m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
