Sify Technologies Limited's (NASDAQ:SIFY) 32% Share Price Surge Not Quite Adding Up
Those holding Sify Technologies Limited (NASDAQ:SIFY) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 32% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. The last 30 days were the cherry on top of the stock's 399% gain in the last year, which is nothing short of spectacular.
After such a large jump in price, you could be forgiven for thinking Sify Technologies is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 2.3x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' Telecom industry have P/S ratios below 1.2x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

What Does Sify Technologies' Recent Performance Look Like?
With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Sify Technologies has been relatively sluggish. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance will improve markedly. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Sify Technologies' to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 9.1%. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see revenue up by 42% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenues over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 53% as estimated by the only analyst watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 75%, which is noticeably more attractive.
In light of this, it's alarming that Sify Technologies' P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Key Takeaway
Sify Technologies' P/S is on the rise since its shares have risen strongly. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
It comes as a surprise to see Sify Technologies trade at such a high P/S given the revenue forecasts look less than stellar. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
