CPS Technologies' (NASDAQ:CPSH) growing losses don't faze investors as the stock soars 10% this past week
The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But if you pick the right business to buy shares in, you can make more than you can lose. For example, the CPS Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ:CPSH) share price had more than doubled in just one year - up 155%. It's also good to see the share price up 27% over the last quarter. Looking back further, the stock price is 30% higher than it was three years ago.
After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.
Because CPS Technologies made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.
In the last year CPS Technologies saw its revenue grow by 7.3%. That's not a very high growth rate considering it doesn't make profits. So we wouldn't have expected the share price to rise by 155%. We're happy that investors have made money, though we wonder if the increase will be sustained. It's quite likely that the market is considering other factors, not just revenue growth.
The graphic below depicts how earnings and revenue have changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).
We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here..
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that CPS Technologies has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 155% in the last twelve months. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 18%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand CPS Technologies better, we need to consider many other factors. For instance, we've identified 3 warning signs for CPS Technologies (2 are potentially serious) that you should be aware of.
