CDW Chief Growth & Innovation Officer and Executive VP Sona Chawla Sells 29% Of Holding
Some CDW Corporation (NASDAQ:CDW) shareholders may be a little concerned to see that the Chief Growth & Innovation Officer and Executive VP, Sona Chawla, recently sold a substantial US$1.1m worth of stock at a price of US$146 per share. That sale reduced their total holding by 29% which is hardly insignificant, but far from the worst we've seen.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At CDW
Notably, that recent sale by Sona Chawla is the biggest insider sale of CDW shares that we've seen in the last year. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$150. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was only 29% of Sona Chawla's holding.

Does CDW Boast High Insider Ownership?
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. CDW insiders own about US$53m worth of shares. That equates to 0.3% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
So What Do The CDW Insider Transactions Indicate?
An insider hasn't bought CDW stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. Looking to the last twelve months, our data doesn't show any insider buying. Insiders own shares, but we're still pretty cautious, given the history of sales. We'd practice some caution before buying! So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company. To help with this, we've discovered 2 warning signs (1 is a bit unpleasant!) that you ought to be aware of before buying any shares in CDW.
