Expensify, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:EXFY) Revenues Are Not Doing Enough For Some Investors

Expensify, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:EXFY) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.8x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the Software industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 4.1x and even P/S above 11x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

How Expensify Has Been Performing

Expensify hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Expensify's Revenue Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Expensify's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 15% decrease to the company's top line. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 50% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 2.7% over the next year. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 14%, which paints a poor picture.

In light of this, it's understandable that Expensify's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

What We Can Learn From Expensify's P/S?

Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

It's clear to see that Expensify maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Expensify's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Expensify you should know about.
