Possible Bearish Signals With O'Reilly Automotive Insiders Disposing Stock
Many O'Reilly Automotive, Inc. (NASDAQ:ORLY) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
O'Reilly Automotive Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Executive Vice Chairman, David O'Reilly, sold US$26m worth of shares at a price of US$1,126 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$1,433. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. It is worth noting that this sale was only 9.4% of David O'Reilly's holding.
O'Reilly Automotive insiders didn't buy any shares over the last year. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

O'Reilly Automotive Insiders Are Selling The Stock
The last three months saw significant insider selling at O'Reilly Automotive. In total, insiders sold US$6.5m worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. Overall this makes us a bit cautious, but it's not the be all and end all.
Insider Ownership
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that O'Reilly Automotive insiders own 0.8% of the company, worth about US$653m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
So What Do The O'Reilly Automotive Insider Transactions Indicate?
Insiders sold O'Reilly Automotive shares recently, but they didn't buy any. And there weren't any purchases to give us comfort, over the last year. But it is good to see that O'Reilly Automotive is growing earnings. The company boasts high insider ownership, but we're a little hesitant, given the history of share sales. In addition to knowing about insider transactions going on, it's beneficial to identify the risks facing O'Reilly Automotive.
