Novavax, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:NVAX) Shares Bounce 35% But Its Business Still Trails The Industry
Novavax, Inc. (NASDAQ:NVAX) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 35% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 30% in the last twelve months.
Although its price has surged higher, Novavax may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.8x, since almost half of all companies in the Biotechs industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 16x and even P/S higher than 75x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Novavax Has Been Performing
Novavax could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Novavax's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 50% decrease to the company's top line. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 107% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 3.9% each year over the next three years. With the industry predicted to deliver 277% growth per year, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.
In light of this, it's understandable that Novavax's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
What Does Novavax's P/S Mean For Investors?
Novavax's recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Novavax maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
