Novavax, Inc. (NASDAQ:NVAX) Surges 206% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement
The Novavax, Inc. (NASDAQ:NVAX) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 206%. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 62% in the last year.
Even after such a large jump in price, Novavax's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.8x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Biotechs industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 12.5x and even P/S above 67x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

What Does Novavax's Recent Performance Look Like?
Novavax could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Novavax's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 27% decrease to the company's top line. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 8.4% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the six analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 14% each year over the next three years. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 210% per annum.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Novavax's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
What We Can Learn From Novavax's P/S?
Even after such a strong price move, Novavax's P/S still trails the rest of the industry. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
It's clear to see that Novavax maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
