Novavax, Inc. (NASDAQ:NVAX) Shares Fly 29% But Investors Aren't Buying For Growth
Novavax, Inc. (NASDAQ:NVAX) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 29% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 48% over that time.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Novavax may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1x, since almost half of all companies in the Biotechs industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 8.2x and even P/S higher than 45x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Novavax's Recent Performance Look Like?
With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Novavax has been relatively sluggish. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Novavax's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 26%. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year revenue frustratingly shrank by 11% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 38% per year during the coming three years according to the five analysts following the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 163% growth per year, that's a disappointing outcome.
In light of this, it's understandable that Novavax's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
What We Can Learn From Novavax's P/S?
Even after such a strong price move, Novavax's P/S still trails the rest of the industry. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that Novavax's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Novavax's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
