One Illumina Insider Raised Their Stake In The Previous Year
Looking at Illumina, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:ILMN ) insider transactions over the last year, we can see that insiders were net buyers. That is, there were more number of shares purchased by insiders than there were sold.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Illumina Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The CEO & Director Jacob Thaysen made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$992k worth of shares at a price of US$137 each. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of US$134. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock when an insider has bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price. Jacob Thaysen was the only individual insider to buy shares in the last twelve months.

Does Illumina Boast High Insider Ownership?
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Insiders own 0.2% of Illumina shares, worth about US$45m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At Illumina Tell Us?
There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. However, our analysis of transactions over the last year is heartening. Overall we don't see anything to make us think Illumina insiders are doubting the company, and they do own shares.
