Insiders Sold US$9.7m Of Travelzoo Stock Possibly Sending Warning Sign
Despite the fact that Travelzoo (NASDAQ:TZOO) stock rose 11% last week, insiders who sold US$9.7m worth of stock in the previous 12 months are likely to be better off. Selling at an average price of US$12.85, which is higher than the current price might have been the right call as holding on to stock would have meant their investment would be worth less now than it was at the time of sale.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Travelzoo
The Founder & Chief Talent Officer, Ralph Bartel, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$1.0m worth of shares at a price of US$13.15 each. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$7.56). So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

Insider Ownership Of Travelzoo
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Insiders own 35% of Travelzoo shares, worth about US$29m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
