Insiders At Alcoa Sold US$1.9m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness
Many Alcoa Corporation (NYSE:AA) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Alcoa
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive VP & Chief Commercial Officer, Renato Bacchi, for US$1.0m worth of shares, at about US$42.29 per share. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$38.61. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern.

Does Alcoa Boast High Insider Ownership?
Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It appears that Alcoa insiders own 0.7% of the company, worth about US$73m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
