The five-year underlying earnings growth at Grocery Outlet Holding (NASDAQ:GO) is promising, but the shareholders are still in the red over that time

Generally speaking long term investing is the way to go. But that doesn't mean long term investors can avoid big losses. For example the Grocery Outlet Holding Corp. (NASDAQ:GO) share price dropped 54% over five years. That's not a lot of fun for true believers. And some of the more recent buyers are probably worried, too, with the stock falling 41% in the last year.

With the stock having lost 5.5% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the unfortunate half decade during which the share price slipped, Grocery Outlet Holding actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 109% per year. So it doesn't seem like EPS is a great guide to understanding how the market is valuing the stock. Or possibly, the market was previously very optimistic, so the stock has disappointed, despite improving EPS.

Due to the lack of correlation between the EPS growth and the falling share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics to try to understand the share price movement.

Revenue is actually up 9.9% over the time period. So it seems one might have to take closer look at the fundamentals to understand why the share price languishes. After all, there may be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 27% in the last year, Grocery Outlet Holding shareholders lost 41%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 9% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider risks, for instance.
