Upwork (NASDAQ:UPWK) delivers shareholders stellar 16% CAGR over 5 years, surging 7.7% in the last week alone
Upwork Inc. (NASDAQ:UPWK) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 18% in the last quarter. But that scarcely detracts from the really solid long term returns generated by the company over five years. We think most investors would be happy with the 109% return, over that period. Generally speaking the long term returns will give you a better idea of business quality than short periods can. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price. Unfortunately not all shareholders will have held it for five years, so spare a thought for those caught in the 41% decline over the last three years: that's a long time to wait for profits.
Since it's been a strong week for Upwork shareholders, let's have a look at trend of the longer term fundamentals.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During the last half decade, Upwork became profitable. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.

It is of course excellent to see how Upwork has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. This free interactive report on Upwork's balance sheet strength is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.
A Different Perspective
Upwork shareholders have received returns of 10% over twelve months, which isn't far from the general market return. We should note here that the five-year TSR is more impressive, at 16% per year. More recently, the share price growth has slowed. But it has to be said the overall picture is one of good long term and short term performance. Arguably that makes Upwork a stock worth watching. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Upwork you should know about.
