Here's Why We Think ICF International (NASDAQ:ICFI) Is Well Worth Watching

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in ICF International (NASDAQ:ICFI). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

ICF International's Improving Profits

Even modest earnings per share growth (EPS) can create meaningful value, when it is sustained reliably from year to year. So EPS growth can certainly encourage an investor to take note of a stock. ICF International's EPS has risen over the last 12 months, growing from US$3.33 to US$3.76. This amounts to a 13% gain; a figure that shareholders will be pleased to see.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. While we note ICF International achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 4.0% to US$1.6b. That's progress.

Are ICF International Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It's pleasing to see company leaders with putting their money on the line, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. So it is good to see that ICF International insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. With a whopping US$76m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. This should keep them focused on creating long term value for shareholders.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but shareholders may be wondering if remuneration policies are in their best interest. A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to ICF International, with market caps between US$1.0b and US$3.2b, is around US$5.4m.

The ICF International CEO received US$4.4m in compensation for the year ending December 2021. That is actually below the median for CEO's of similarly sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Is ICF International Worth Keeping An Eye On?

One positive for ICF International is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. The fact that EPS is growing is a genuine positive for ICF International, but the pleasant picture gets better than that. Boasting both modest CEO pay and considerable insider ownership, you'd argue this one is worthy of the watchlist, at least.
