Recent 11% pullback isn't enough to hurt long-term Luxfer Holdings (NYSE:LXFR) shareholders, they're still up 41% over 1 year
Luxfer Holdings PLC (NYSE:LXFR) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 13% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last year have been pleasing. After all, the share price is up a market-beating 35% in that time.
While this past week has detracted from the company's one-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During the last year Luxfer Holdings grew its earnings per share, moving from a loss to a profit.
When a company has just transitioned to profitability, earnings per share growth is not always the best way to look at the share price action.
Absent any improvement, we don't think a thirst for dividends is pushing up the Luxfer Holdings' share price. It saw it's revenue decline by 3.2% over twelve months. It's fair to say we're a little surprised to see the share price up, and that makes us cautious.

We know that Luxfer Holdings has improved its bottom line lately, but what does the future have in store? So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think Luxfer Holdings will earn in the future (free profit forecasts).
What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Luxfer Holdings' TSR for the last 1 year was 41%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Luxfer Holdings has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 41% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. That certainly beats the loss of about 0.8% per year over the last half decade. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
