Xometry (NASDAQ:XMTR) Is Carrying A Fair Bit Of Debt

The external fund manager backed by Berkshire Hathaway's Charlie Munger, Li Lu, makes no bones about it when he says 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. As with many other companies Xometry, Inc. (NASDAQ:XMTR) makes use of debt. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?

What Risk Does Debt Bring?

Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Of course, debt can be an important tool in businesses, particularly capital heavy businesses. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does Xometry Carry?

As you can see below, Xometry had US$284.1m of debt, at March 2025, which is about the same as the year before. You can click the chart for greater detail. However, because it has a cash reserve of US$231.4m, its net debt is less, at about US$52.7m.

How Healthy Is Xometry's Balance Sheet?

The latest balance sheet data shows that Xometry had liabilities of US$89.4m due within a year, and liabilities of US$289.6m falling due after that. On the other hand, it had cash of US$231.4m and US$85.5m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by US$62.2m.

Given Xometry has a market capitalization of US$1.65b, it's hard to believe these liabilities pose much threat. Having said that, it's clear that we should continue to monitor its balance sheet, lest it change for the worse. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Xometry's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you want to see what the professionals think, you might find this free report on analyst profit forecasts to be interesting.

See our latest analysis for Xometry

In the last year Xometry wasn't profitable at an EBIT level, but managed to grow its revenue by 19%, to US$574m. That rate of growth is a bit slow for our taste, but it takes all types to make a world.

Caveat Emptor

Over the last twelve months Xometry produced an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss. Indeed, it lost US$52m at the EBIT level. When we look at that and recall the liabilities on its balance sheet, relative to cash, it seems unwise to us for the company to have any debt. Quite frankly we think the balance sheet is far from match-fit, although it could be improved with time. However, it doesn't help that it burned through US$27m of cash over the last year. So suffice it to say we do consider the stock to be risky. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for Xometry that you should be aware of before investing here.
