Community Financial System's (NYSE:CBU) one-year total shareholder returns outpace the underlying earnings growth
Community Financial System, Inc. (NYSE:CBU) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 12% in the last month. Taking a longer term view we see the stock is up over one year. However, its return of 18% does fall short of the market return of, 25%.
While this past week has detracted from the company's one-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Community Financial System was able to grow EPS by 12% in the last twelve months. This EPS growth is significantly lower than the 18% increase in the share price. This indicates that the market is now more optimistic about the stock.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Community Financial System, it has a TSR of 22% for the last 1 year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Community Financial System shareholders are up 22% for the year (even including dividends). But that was short of the market average. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 0.6% per year over five year. It is possible that returns will improve along with the business fundamentals.
