So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. As with many other companies Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) makes use of debt. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?
Why Does Debt Bring Risk?
Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does Tesla Carry?
The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that at June 2024 Tesla had debt of US$7.36b, up from US$1.52b in one year. But on the other hand it also has US$30.7b in cash, leading to a US$23.4b net cash position.
How Strong Is Tesla's Balance Sheet?
According to the last reported balance sheet, Tesla had liabilities of US$27.7b due within 12 months, and liabilities of US$17.8b due beyond 12 months. Offsetting this, it had US$30.7b in cash and US$3.91b in receivables that were due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling US$10.9b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
This state of affairs indicates that Tesla's balance sheet looks quite solid, as its total liabilities are just about equal to its liquid assets. So it's very unlikely that the US$729.0b company is short on cash, but still worth keeping an eye on the balance sheet. While it does have liabilities worth noting, Tesla also has more cash than debt, so we're pretty confident it can manage its debt safely.
It is just as well that Tesla's load is not too heavy, because its EBIT was down 43% over the last year. Falling earnings (if the trend continues) could eventually make even modest debt quite risky. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Tesla's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. But our final consideration is also important, because a company cannot pay debt with paper profits; it needs cold hard cash. While Tesla has net cash on its balance sheet, it's still worth taking a look at its ability to convert earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to free cash flow, to help us understand how quickly it is building (or eroding) that cash balance. Looking at the most recent three years, Tesla recorded free cash flow of 49% of its EBIT, which is weaker than we'd expect. That's not great, when it comes to paying down debt.
Summing Up
We could understand if investors are concerned about Tesla's liabilities, but we can be reassured by the fact it has has net cash of US$23.4b. So we don't have any problem with Tesla's use of debt. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet.
