Investing in KGHM Polska Miedz (WSE:KGH) three years ago would have delivered you a 32% gain
Investors can buy low cost index fund if they want to receive the average market return. But across the board there are plenty of stocks that underperform the market. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. (WSE:KGH) share price is up 29% in the last three years, that falls short of the market return. Disappointingly, the share price is down 3.8% in the last year.
Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During three years of share price growth, KGHM Polska Miedz moved from a loss to profitability. So we would expect a higher share price over the period.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for KGHM Polska Miedz the TSR over the last 3 years was 32%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
KGHM Polska Miedz shareholders are down 3.8% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 28%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 0.8% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend.
