Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.
Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like XTB (WSE:XTB). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

How Fast Is XTB Growing Its Earnings Per Share?
In business, profits are a key measure of success; and share prices tend to reflect earnings per share (EPS) performance. Which is why EPS growth is looked upon so favourably. It's an outstanding feat for XTB to have grown EPS from zł1.48 to zł5.56 in just one year. When you see earnings grow that quickly, it often means good things ahead for the company. Could this be a sign that the business has reached an inflection point?
Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. It's noted that XTB's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort our analysis of its margins. EBIT margins for XTB remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 134% to zł1.2b. That's a real positive.

While profitability drives the upside, prudent investors always check the balance sheet, too.
Are XTB Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Many consider high insider ownership to be a strong sign of alignment between the leaders of a company and the ordinary shareholders. So we're pleased to report that XTB insiders own a meaningful share of the business. In fact, they own 67% of the company, so they will share in the same delights and challenges experienced by the ordinary shareholders. This makes it apparent they will be incentivised to plan for the long term - a positive for shareholders with a sit and hold strategy. zł1.8b This is an incredible endorsement from them.
It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Well, based on the CEO pay, you'd argue that they are indeed. For companies with market capitalisations between zł980m and zł3.9b, like XTB, the median CEO pay is around zł1.6m.
XTB offered total compensation worth zł1.2m to its CEO in the year to December 2021. That seems pretty reasonable, especially given it's below the median for similar sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.
Should You Add XTB To Your Watchlist?
XTB's earnings per share growth have been climbing higher at an appreciable rate. The cherry on top is that insiders own a bucket-load of shares, and the CEO pay seems really quite reasonable. The strong EPS improvement suggests the businesses is humming along. XTB certainly ticks a few boxes, so we think it's probably well worth further consideration. However, before you get too excited we've discovered 1 warning sign for XTB that you should be aware of.
