Should You Be Adding ASR Nederland (AMS:ASRNL) To Your Watchlist Today?
Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'
In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like ASR Nederland (AMS:ASRNL). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

ASR Nederland's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.
As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. ASR Nederland managed to grow EPS by 13% per year, over three years. That's a good rate of growth, if it can be sustained.
I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. I note that ASR Nederland's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. While we note ASR Nederland's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 28% to €9.7b. That's progress.

Are ASR Nederland Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Like the kids in the streets standing up for their beliefs, insider share purchases give me reason to believe in a brighter future. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. However, insiders are sometimes wrong, and we don't know the exact thinking behind their acquisitions.
It's good to see ASR Nederland insiders walking the walk, by spending €199k on shares in just twelve months. When you contrast that with the complete lack of sales, it's easy for shareholders to brim with joyful expectancy. It is also worth noting that it was Chairman of the Executive Board & CEO Jos P. Baeten who made the biggest single purchase, worth €49k, paying €38.93 per share.
It's reassuring that ASR Nederland insiders are buying the stock, but that's not the only reason to think management are fair to shareholders. I refer to the very reasonable level of CEO pay. For companies with market capitalizations between €3.7b and €11b, like ASR Nederland, the median CEO pay is around €2.6m.
The CEO of ASR Nederland only received €1.1m in total compensation for the year ending . That looks like modest pay to me, and may hint at a certain respect for the interests of shareholders. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.
Is ASR Nederland Worth Keeping An Eye On?
As I already mentioned, ASR Nederland is a growing business, which is what I like to see. And that's not all, folks. We've also seen insiders buying stock, and noted modest executive pay. If that doesn't automatically earn it a spot on your watchlist then I'd posit it warrants a closer look at the very least. However, before you get too excited we've discovered 3 warning signs for ASR Nederland (2 are a bit concerning!) that you should be aware of.
The good news is that ASR Nederland is not the only growth stock with insider buying. Here's a list of them... with insider buying in the last three months!
