The one-year returns have been strong for RF Materials (KOSDAQ:327260) shareholders despite underlying losses increasing
The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But if you pick the right stock, you can make a lot more than 100%. Take, for example RF Materials Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:327260). Its share price is already up an impressive 161% in the last twelve months. Better yet, the share price has gained 195% in the last quarter. Also impressive, the stock is up 56% over three years, making long term shareholders happy, too.
Since the stock has added ₩27b to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.
RF Materials wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.
In the last year RF Materials saw its revenue grow by 14%. That's not great considering the company is losing money. In contrast, the share price took off during the year, gaining 161%. We're happy that investors have made money, though we wonder if the increase will be sustained. It's quite likely that the market is considering other factors, not just revenue growth.

A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that RF Materials shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 161% over one year. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 13%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Case in point: We've spotted 3 warning signs for RF Materials you should be aware of, and 1 of them is concerning.
