Under The Bonnet, Trend Micro's (TSE:4704) Returns Look Impressive
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. So when we looked at the ROCE trend of Trend Micro (TSE:4704) we really liked what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for Trend Micro, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.43 = JP¥51b ÷ (JP¥363b - JP¥244b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025).
So, Trend Micro has an ROCE of 43%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Software industry average of 17%.

The Trend Of ROCE
We're pretty happy with how the ROCE has been trending at Trend Micro. The figures show that over the last five years, returns on capital have grown by 152%. That's a very favorable trend because this means that the company is earning more per dollar of capital that's being employed. Speaking of capital employed, the company is actually utilizing 48% less than it was five years ago, which can be indicative of a business that's improving its efficiency. Trend Micro may be selling some assets so it's worth investigating if the business has plans for future investments to increase returns further still.
On a side note, we noticed that the improvement in ROCE appears to be partly fueled by an increase in current liabilities. Essentially the business now has suppliers or short-term creditors funding about 67% of its operations, which isn't ideal. Given it's pretty high ratio, we'd remind investors that having current liabilities at those levels can bring about some risks in certain businesses.
Our Take On Trend Micro's ROCE
In summary, it's great to see that Trend Micro has been able to turn things around and earn higher returns on lower amounts of capital. And investors seem to expect more of this going forward, since the stock has rewarded shareholders with a 81% return over the last five years. So given the stock has proven it has promising trends, it's worth researching the company further to see if these trends are likely to persist.
