Slammed 28% Optimus Group Company Limited (TSE:9268) Screens Well Here But There Might Be A Catch
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Optimus Group Company Limited (TSE:9268) share price has dived 28% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 38% in that time.
Even after such a large drop in price, given about half the companies in Japan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 14x, you may still consider Optimus Group as a highly attractive investment with its 6.4x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
Optimus Group certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as Optimus Group's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 65%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 49% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 12% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Optimus Group's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.
The Key Takeaway
Having almost fallen off a cliff, Optimus Group's share price has pulled its P/E way down as well. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
Our examination of Optimus Group revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
