The total return for OSAKA Titanium technologiesLtd (TSE:5726) investors has risen faster than earnings growth over the last five years
OSAKA Titanium technologies Co.,Ltd. (TSE:5726) shareholders have seen the share price descend 28% over the month. But at least the stock is up over the last five years. However we are not very impressed because the share price is only up 62%, less than the market return of 94%. Unfortunately not all shareholders will have held it for the long term, so spare a thought for those caught in the 40% decline over the last twelve months.
While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.
To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During the five years of share price growth, OSAKA Titanium technologiesLtd moved from a loss to profitability. That's generally thought to be a genuine positive, so investors may expect to see an increasing share price.
The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).
We know that OSAKA Titanium technologiesLtd has improved its bottom line over the last three years, but what does the future have in store? You can see how its balance sheet has strengthened (or weakened) over time in this free interactive graphic.
What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, OSAKA Titanium technologiesLtd's TSR for the last 5 years was 72%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
OSAKA Titanium technologiesLtd shareholders are down 39% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 0.4%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 11% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
