Vaibhav Global's (NSE:VAIBHAVGBL) earnings have declined over three years, contributing to shareholders 52% loss
It's nice to see the Vaibhav Global Limited (NSE:VAIBHAVGBL) share price up 10% in a week. But that is small recompense for the exasperating returns over three years. Indeed, the share price is down a tragic 54% in the last three years. So the improvement may be a real relief to some. While many would remain nervous, there could be further gains if the business can put its best foot forward.
While the stock has risen 10% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Vaibhav Global saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 20% per year, over the last three years. This change in EPS is reasonably close to the 23% average annual decrease in the share price. So it seems like sentiment towards the stock hasn't changed all that much over time. It seems like the share price is reflecting the declining earnings per share.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Vaibhav Global the TSR over the last 3 years was -52%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
Investors in Vaibhav Global had a tough year, with a total loss of 38% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 2.8%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 5%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
