Does North Media (CPH:NORTHM) Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.
If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in North Media (CPH:NORTHM). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

North Media's Improving Profits
In the last three years North Media's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like a falcon taking flight, North Media's EPS soared from kr.11.34 to kr.16.74, over the last year. That's a commendable gain of 48%.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). This approach makes North Media look pretty good, on balance; although revenue is flattish, EBIT margins improved from 16% to 23% in the last year. That's a real positive.

North Media isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of kr.1.6b. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.
Are North Media Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that North Media insiders own a significant number of shares certainly appeals to me. Indeed, with a collective holding of 64%, company insiders are in control and have plenty of capital behind the venture. To me this is a good sign because it suggests they will be incentivised to build value for shareholders over the long term. With that sort of holding, insiders have about kr.1.0b riding on the stock, at current prices. That's nothing to sneeze at!
Is North Media Worth Keeping An Eye On?
Given my belief that share price follows earnings per share you can easily imagine how I feel about North Media's strong EPS growth. Further, the high level of insider ownership impresses me, and suggests that I'm not the only one who appreciates the EPS growth. So this is very likely the kind of business that I like to spend time researching, with a view to discerning its true value. Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
