FamiCord AG (ETR:V3V) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 65% in the last quarter. But if you look at the last five years the returns have not been good. After all, the share price is down 48% in that time, significantly under-performing the market.

While the last five years has been tough for FamiCord shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

FamiCord isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

Over five years, FamiCord grew its revenue at 32% per year. That's well above most other pre-profit companies. Shareholders are no doubt disappointed with the loss of 8%, each year, in that time. So you might argue the FamiCord should get more credit for its rather impressive revenue growth over the period. So now is probably an apt time to look closer at the stock, if you think it has potential.

A Different Perspective

FamiCord provided a TSR of 43% over the year. That's fairly close to the broader market return. To take a positive view, the gain is pleasing, and it sure beats annualized TSR loss of 8%, which was endured over half a decade. We're pretty skeptical of turnaround stories, but it's good to see the recent share price recovery. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with FamiCord , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
