China National Medicines (SHSE:600511) jumps 3.0% this week, though earnings growth is still tracking behind three-year shareholder returns
By buying an index fund, you can roughly match the market return with ease. But many of us dare to dream of bigger returns, and build a portfolio ourselves. For example, China National Medicines Corporation Ltd. (SHSE:600511) shareholders have seen the share price rise 15% over three years, well in excess of the market decline (14%, not including dividends). On the other hand, the returns haven't been quite so good recently, with shareholders up just 6.8%, including dividends.
The past week has proven to be lucrative for China National Medicines investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's three-year performance.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
China National Medicines was able to grow its EPS at 8.8% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. The average annual share price increase of 5% is actually lower than the EPS growth. So it seems investors have become more cautious about the company, over time. We'd venture the lowish P/E ratio of 11.24 also reflects the negative sentiment around the stock.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, China National Medicines' TSR for the last 3 years was 24%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
China National Medicines provided a TSR of 6.8% over the last twelve months. But that return falls short of the market. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it's actually better than the average return of 4% over half a decade This could indicate that the company is winning over new investors, as it pursues its strategy. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. To that end, you should be aware of the 1 warning sign we've spotted with China National Medicines .
