With EPS Growth And More, UBS Group (VTX:UBSG) Makes An Interesting Case
It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.
Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like UBS Group (VTX:UBSG). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

UBS Group's Improving Profits
Strong earnings per share (EPS) results are an indicator of a company achieving solid profits, which investors look upon favourably and so the share price tends to reflect great EPS performance. Which is why EPS growth is looked upon so favourably. It is awe-striking that UBS Group's EPS went from US$2.20 to US$9.55 in just one year. While it's difficult to sustain growth at that level, it bodes well for the company's outlook for the future.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Our analysis has highlighted that UBS Group's revenue from operations did not account for all of their revenue in the previous 12 months, so our analysis of its margins might not accurately reflect the underlying business. EBIT margins for UBS Group remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 4.5% to US$37b. That's progress.

Are UBS Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Owing to the size of UBS Group, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a significant proportion of the company. But thanks to their investment in the company, it's pleasing to see that there are still incentives to align their actions with the shareholders. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$266m. While that is a lot of skin in the game, we note this holding only totals to 0.3% of the business, which is a result of the company being so large. So despite their percentage holding being low, company management still have plenty of reasons to deliver the best outcomes for investors.
Is UBS Group Worth Keeping An Eye On?
UBS Group's earnings per share have been soaring, with growth rates sky high. That sort of growth is nothing short of eye-catching, and the large investment held by insiders should certainly brighten the view of the company. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So based on this quick analysis, we do think it's worth considering UBS Group for a spot on your watchlist. What about risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for UBS Group (of which 1 is potentially serious!) you should know about.
