Investors are selling off Reunion Neuroscience (TSE:REUN), lack of profits no doubt contribute to shareholders one-year loss

The art and science of stock market investing requires a tolerance for losing money on some of the shares you buy. But it would be foolish to simply accept every extremely large loss as an inevitable part of the game. So we hope that those who held Reunion Neuroscience Inc. (TSE:REUN) during the last year don't lose the lesson, in addition to the 84% hit to the value of their shares. That'd be enough to make even the strongest stomachs churn. Reunion Neuroscience hasn't been listed for long, so although we're wary of recent listings that perform poorly, it may still prove itself with time. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 15% in the last 90 days. This could be related to the recent financial results - you can catch up on the most recent data by reading our company report. We really feel for shareholders in this scenario. It's a good reminder of the importance of diversification, and it's worth keeping in mind there's more to life than money, anyway.

After losing 11% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

View our latest analysis for Reunion Neuroscience

Reunion Neuroscience isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

Reunion Neuroscience grew its revenue by 823% over the last year. That's well above most other pre-profit companies. So the hefty 84% share price crash makes us think the company has somehow offended market participants. There's clearly something unusual going on here such as an acquisition that hasn't delivered expected profits. We'd recommend taking a very close look at the stock (and any available forecasts), before considering a purchase, because the share price is not correlated with the revenue growth, that's for sure. Of course, markets do over-react so share price drop may be too harsh.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Reunion Neuroscience's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. We note that Reunion Neuroscience's TSR, at -73% is higher than its share price return of -84%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.

A Different Perspective

We doubt Reunion Neuroscience shareholders are happy with the loss of 73% over twelve months. That falls short of the market, which lost 0.1%. There's no doubt that's a disappointment, but the stock may well have fared better in a stronger market. With the stock down 15% over the last three months, the market doesn't seem to believe that the company has solved all its problems. Basically, most investors should be wary of buying into a poor-performing stock, unless the business itself has clearly improved. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - Reunion Neuroscience has 6 warning signs (and 1 which can't be ignored) we think you should know about.
