Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.

Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether West Vault Mining (CVE:WVM) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. Let's start with an examination of the business' cash, relative to its cash burn.

How Long Is West Vault Mining's Cash Runway?

You can calculate a company's cash runway by dividing the amount of cash it has by the rate at which it is spending that cash. In September 2022, West Vault Mining had CA$6.7m in cash, and was debt-free. In the last year, its cash burn was CA$1.3m. Therefore, from September 2022 it had 5.1 years of cash runway. Even though this is but one measure of the company's cash burn, the thought of such a long cash runway warms our bellies in a comforting way. Can West Vault Mining Raise More Cash Easily?

Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.

West Vault Mining has a market capitalisation of CA$61m and burnt through CA$1.3m last year, which is 2.1% of the company's market value. That means it could easily issue a few shares to fund more growth, and might well be in a position to borrow cheaply.

How Risky Is West Vault Mining's Cash Burn Situation?

Given it's an early stage company, we don't have a lot of data with which to judge West Vault Mining's cash burn. Certainly, we'd be more confident in the stock if it was generating operating revenue. Having said that, we can say that its cash runway was a real positive. Overall, we think its cash burn seems perfectly reasonable, and we are not concerned by it. On another note, we conducted an in-depth investigation of the company, and identified 3 warning signs for West Vault Mining (2 shouldn't be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
