Here's Why We're Not At All Concerned With FINEOS Corporation Holdings' (ASX:FCL) Cash Burn Situation

Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. For example, biotech and mining exploration companies often lose money for years before finding success with a new treatment or mineral discovery. But the harsh reality is that very many loss making companies burn through all their cash and go bankrupt.

So, the natural question for FINEOS Corporation Holdings (ASX:FCL) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. Let's start with an examination of the business' cash, relative to its cash burn.

Does FINEOS Corporation Holdings Have A Long Cash Runway?

A company's cash runway is the amount of time it would take to burn through its cash reserves at its current cash burn rate. When FINEOS Corporation Holdings last reported its balance sheet in June 2022, it had zero debt and cash worth €44m. Importantly, its cash burn was €15m over the trailing twelve months. That means it had a cash runway of about 3.0 years as of June 2022. Importantly, though, analysts think that FINEOS Corporation Holdings will reach cashflow breakeven before then. In that case, it may never reach the end of its cash runway. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.

How Well Is FINEOS Corporation Holdings Growing?

We reckon the fact that FINEOS Corporation Holdings managed to shrink its cash burn by 34% over the last year is rather encouraging. And operating revenue was up by 17% too. Considering the factors above, the company doesn’t fare badly when it comes to assessing how it is changing over time. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.

How Easily Can FINEOS Corporation Holdings Raise Cash?

There's no doubt FINEOS Corporation Holdings seems to be in a fairly good position, when it comes to managing its cash burn, but even if it's only hypothetical, it's always worth asking how easily it could raise more money to fund growth. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.

Since it has a market capitalisation of €332m, FINEOS Corporation Holdings' €15m in cash burn equates to about 4.5% of its market value. Given that is a rather small percentage, it would probably be really easy for the company to fund another year's growth by issuing some new shares to investors, or even by taking out a loan.

Is FINEOS Corporation Holdings' Cash Burn A Worry?

As you can probably tell by now, we're not too worried about FINEOS Corporation Holdings' cash burn. For example, we think its cash runway suggests that the company is on a good path. Its revenue growth wasn't quite as good, but was still rather encouraging! One real positive is that analysts are forecasting that the company will reach breakeven. After considering a range of factors in this article, we're pretty relaxed about its cash burn, since the company seems to be in a good position to continue to fund its growth. When you don't have traditional metrics like earnings per share and free cash flow to value a company, many are extra motivated to consider qualitative factors such as whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
