Here's Why We Think Eagers Automotive (ASX:APE) Is Well Worth Watching
Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Eagers Automotive (ASX:APE), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

Eagers Automotive's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.
If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. Impressively, Eagers Automotive has grown EPS by 36% per year, compound, in the last three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be smiling.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). This approach makes Eagers Automotive look pretty good, on balance; although revenue is flattish, EBIT margins improved from 3.1% to 5.6% in the last year. That's a real positive.

Are Eagers Automotive Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Like the kids in the streets standing up for their beliefs, insider share purchases give me reason to believe in a brighter future. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. Of course, we can never be sure what insiders are thinking, we can only judge their actions.
The good news is that Eagers Automotive insiders spent a whopping AU$1.1m on stock in just one year, and I didn't see any selling. And so I find myself almost expectant, and certainly hopeful, that this large outlay signals prescient optimism for the business. We also note that it was the Independent Non-Executive Director, Gregory Duncan, who made the biggest single acquisition, paying AU$695k for shares at about AU$13.91 each.
Along with the insider buying, another encouraging sign for Eagers Automotive is that insiders, as a group, have a considerable shareholding. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth AU$325m. This suggests to me that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders' interests when making decisions!
Is Eagers Automotive Worth Keeping An Eye On?
You can't deny that Eagers Automotive has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. Not only that, but we can see that insiders both own a lot of, and are buying more, shares in the company. So it's fair to say I think this stock may well deserve a spot on your watchlist. It's still necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
