Here's Why I Think Old Dominion Freight Line (NASDAQ:ODFL) Is An Interesting Stock
Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Old Dominion Freight Line (NASDAQ:ODFL), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Quickly Is Old Dominion Freight Line Increasing Earnings Per Share?
As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. Over the last three years, Old Dominion Freight Line has grown EPS by 17% per year. That's a pretty good rate, if the company can sustain it.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. The good news is that Old Dominion Freight Line is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 5.3 percentage points to 25%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Old Dominion Freight Line Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$34b company like Old Dominion Freight Line. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they have a glittering mountain of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$3.8b. I would find that kind of skin in the game quite encouraging, if I owned shares, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience my success, or failure, with the stock.
It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Old Dominion Freight Line, with market caps over US$8.0b, is about US$11m.
The Old Dominion Freight Line CEO received US$8.0m in compensation for the year ending . That seems pretty reasonable, especially given its below the median for similar sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.
Does Old Dominion Freight Line Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
As I already mentioned, Old Dominion Freight Line is a growing business, which is what I like to see. The fact that EPS is growing is a genuine positive for Old Dominion Freight Line, but the pretty picture gets better than that. Boasting both modest CEO pay and considerable insider ownership, I'd argue this one is worthy of the watchlist, at least. You still need to take note of risks, for example - Old Dominion Freight Line has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
