Landstar System (NASDAQ:LSTR) Seems To Use Debt Quite Sensibly
The external fund manager backed by Berkshire Hathaway's Charlie Munger, Li Lu, makes no bones about it when he says 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. Importantly, Landstar System, Inc. (NASDAQ:LSTR) does carry debt. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
When Is Debt Dangerous?
Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. While that is not too common, we often do see indebted companies permanently diluting shareholders because lenders force them to raise capital at a distressed price. Having said that, the most common situation is where a company manages its debt reasonably well - and to its own advantage. When we think about a company's use of debt, we first look at cash and debt together.
How Much Debt Does Landstar System Carry?
As you can see below, Landstar System had US$48.0m of debt at September 2025, down from US$50.7m a year prior. But it also has US$434.4m in cash to offset that, meaning it has US$386.4m net cash.
A Look At Landstar System's Liabilities
The latest balance sheet data shows that Landstar System had liabilities of US$619.1m due within a year, and liabilities of US$154.4m falling due after that. On the other hand, it had cash of US$434.4m and US$752.4m worth of receivables due within a year. So it actually has US$413.3m more liquid assets than total liabilities.
This surplus suggests that Landstar System has a conservative balance sheet, and could probably eliminate its debt without much difficulty. Succinctly put, Landstar System boasts net cash, so it's fair to say it does not have a heavy debt load!

In fact Landstar System's saving grace is its low debt levels, because its EBIT has tanked 21% in the last twelve months. When it comes to paying off debt, falling earnings are no more useful than sugary sodas are for your health. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Landstar System's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you want to see what the professionals think, you might find this free report on analyst profit forecasts to be interesting.
But our final consideration is also important, because a company cannot pay debt with paper profits; it needs cold hard cash. Landstar System may have net cash on the balance sheet, but it is still interesting to look at how well the business converts its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to free cash flow, because that will influence both its need for, and its capacity to manage debt. Happily for any shareholders, Landstar System actually produced more free cash flow than EBIT over the last three years. That sort of strong cash conversion gets us as excited as the crowd when the beat drops at a Daft Punk concert.
Summing Up
While we empathize with investors who find debt concerning, you should keep in mind that Landstar System has net cash of US$386.4m, as well as more liquid assets than liabilities. And it impressed us with free cash flow of US$199m, being 111% of its EBIT. So we are not troubled with Landstar System's debt use. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. To that end, you should be aware of the 1 warning sign we've spotted with Landstar System .
