With EPS Growth And More, Forward Air (NASDAQ:FWRD) Makes An Interesting Case
Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.
Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Forward Air (NASDAQ:FWRD). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

Forward Air's Earnings Per Share Are Growing
If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS) outcomes. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. Impressively, Forward Air has grown EPS by 36% per year, compound, in the last three years. If growth like this continues on into the future, then shareholders will have plenty to smile about.
It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Forward Air shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 9.6% to 13%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Forward Air Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
It's said that there's no smoke without fire. For investors, insider buying is often the smoke that indicates which stocks could set the market alight. Because often, the purchase of stock is a sign that the buyer views it as undervalued. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.
Even though some insiders sold down their holdings, their actions speak louder than words with US$304k more invested than sold by people who know they company best. This overall confidence in the company at current the valuation signals their optimism. It is also worth noting that it was Independent Director Scott Niswonger who made the biggest single purchase, worth US$902k, paying US$90.15 per share.
The good news, alongside the insider buying, for Forward Air bulls is that insiders (collectively) have a meaningful investment in the stock. Indeed, they hold US$28m worth of its stock. This considerable investment should help drive long-term value in the business. Despite being just 1.1% of the company, the value of that investment is enough to show insiders have plenty riding on the venture.
Shareholders have more to smile about than just insiders adding more shares to their already sizeable holdings. The cherry on top is that the CEO, Tom Schmitt is paid comparatively modestly to CEOs at similar sized companies. Our analysis has discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Forward Air with market caps between US$2.0b and US$6.4b is about US$6.8m.
The Forward Air CEO received US$6.0m in compensation for the year ending December 2021. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies and seems pretty reasonable. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.
Is Forward Air Worth Keeping An Eye On?
For growth investors, Forward Air's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. On top of that, insiders own a significant stake in the company and have been buying more shares. So it's fair to say that this stock may well deserve a spot on your watchlist. However, before you get too excited we've discovered 1 warning sign for Forward Air that you should be aware of.
The good news is that Forward Air is not the only growth stock with insider buying. Here's a list of them... with insider buying in the last three months!
