CSX (CSX), Why Is It Getting Fresh Attention Now?

CSX (CSX) is drawing investor attention after recent share price moves, with the stock last closing at US$51.51. That activity is prompting a closer look at how its freight rail and trucking business is positioned.

For context, CSX’s recent share price movement comes after a strong run, with a year to date share price return of 42.02% and a 1 year total shareholder return of 61.18%. This is alongside a softer 30 day share price return that suggests momentum has cooled slightly in the very short term.

After a strong 12 month run for CSX and a recent pause in momentum, the question now is whether the current valuation still offers an attractive balance of upside potential against the risks. The next step is to test the numbers.

Leverage on its own is close to useless as a screen right now, because so much corporate debt was termed out at 2 to 3% and has not repriced.
